The landscape is an enormous source of inspiration for the Dutch painter Maja Boot.
These works are about nature or an abstract representation of it.
It is increasingly about feeling form and color and the looseness of her painting.
I like spaces that feel earthy but belong to heaven.
Canopies, beach houses, domes and verandas. Attempts to bound spaces that cannot be bounded.
Attempts to make the elusive tangible. The heavenly houses overlook that which is vulnerable… a place for the soul.
Maja
She paints the sea and her food. Sardines, shrimps, mussels, oysters. During her working holidays on the Wadden Islands and when the mudflats dry up, she collects oysters and eats the mussels from the bows of the boats. To eat and to model her canvases as a still life. Maja is a master of using a palette knife and brush to keep things to their simplest form. Text: Josette Berg
Her name is Boot and she paints boats, for Maja a boat is synonymous with rest. During her stay on Vlieland and Terschelling she saw the boats dry up at low tide and imagined a forced stay in such a boat as ultimate bliss for a while’ not be’. In Brittany she systematically painted the rough, pure landscape for years on end. The colours, the stones, the beach and the water were her source of inspiration. Text: Josette Berg
